In November 2010, OVC responded to the grantees’ comments from the 2009 Discretionary Grantee Meeting by providing referrals to new and existing information and resources and noted when suggestions from grantees were implemented. Free, web-based training available this January and February to professionals who assist victims of drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA). This OVC-funded course from RTI International is free and covers terminology, drugs, consent, evidence collection, and the laboratory process in providing victim-centered care in DFSA cases. OVC launches the Vision 21: Transforming Victim Services Web site to keep the crime victims field informed about the initiative’s mission, objectives, and contributors. The initiative will expand the vision and impact of the crime victims field by designing a philosophical and strategic framework for defining the role of the field in the country’s response to crime and moving forward in the future. The Office for Victims of Crime and Bureau of Justice Assistance release the Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force Strategy and Operations e-Guide on January 11, 2011. This e-Guide supports the important work of multidisciplinary anti-human trafficking Task Forces around the country and provides direction and promising practices on anti-human trafficking Task Force creation, structure, and enhancement. This e-Guide also includes links to many tools, trainings, and resources for victim service providers, law enforcement agencies, and prosecutors. (Posted January 11, 2011)
President Obama proclaims January 2011 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. On December 22, 2010, President Obama called upon the people of the United States to recognize the vital role we can play in ending modern slavery and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities. National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month will culminate in the annual celebration of National Freedom Day on February 1. The 2012 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) Resource Guide is a comprehensive kit to serve as a resource to be used to heighten awareness of crime victim issues during NCVRW in April 2012. Attorney General Eric Holder spoke at the 12th National Indian Nations Conference on December 9, 2010, during a week of Justice Department events with Tribal Country. These events are part of ongoing efforts to create better communication and coordination to fight crime and promote justice in tribal communities.
In addition to Attorney General Eric Holder’s remarks at the 12th National Indian Nations Conference, sponsored by OVC, the week commenced with an Interdepartmental Tribal Justice, Safety and Wellness, which included workshops and plenary sessions that focused on Native American wellness, examining topics such as tribal youth programs; victim’s assistance; suicide prevention; alcohol and substance abuse; community-based partnerships; domestic violence and sexual assault; and data reporting and information sharing. The 12th National Indian Nations Conference focused on sharing knowledge and ideas for developing programs that serve the unique needs of crime victims in Indian Country.

Through this solicitation, NIJ seeks to understand why so many sexual assault kits are not tested—not forwarded from police evidence rooms to crime labs for DNA testing—and to develop innovative approaches to solve this problem. OVC invites applications for State Victim Assistance Academy (SVAA) grants to develop SVAAs that meet the educational and training needs of victim service providers and allied professionals in states that have not yet received OVC funding to develop an SVAA. OVC released e-publication to assist victim service providers help victims of identity theft and financial fraud. This free resource showcases the efforts of four grantees helping victims of these crimes and offers practical tools and information on developing case protocols, training staff, and staging campaigns as well as providing self-help materials to enable victims to become better self-advocates. The Family Violence Prevention Center, Office of Criminal Justice Services, Ohio Department of Public Safety, has released Excellence In Advocacy: A Victim-Centered Approach to provide a basis of knowledge about working in the advocacy field and to address different topics victim advocates may encounter such as vicarious trauma, emerging issues, legal remedies and other subjects.
This manual is intended for professionals who have been working with victims of crime for 5 years or less, though it may benefit all victim advocates and other service providers. The interactive PDF is available free to download. (Posted December 2010)
