Message from the Director
September 11: Two Years Later

Two years have passed since the faith of our Nation was put to perhaps its greatest test. All of us became victims on September 11, 2001. We all experienced the shock, the despair, and the sense of profound vulnerability that crime victims feel in the wake of tragedy. And, for a moment, our common suffering brought America together.

But as we remember the terrible events of that day, we do so with the knowledge that for the families and friends of those who died, the grieving still continues. The pain that burdens their hearts is with them every minute, not extinguishable by a switch of the channel or a change in the conversation. For them, every day is a day of inescapable remembrance.

As we mark the passing of the two years since the terrorist attacks, I ask that you renew your hopes and prayers for those who lost so much that day. Help them honor the memory of their loved ones and find vent for their anguish. Your vigils need not be public, only heartfelt and sincere.

For you who have endured the suffering of such great loss, please know that we in the Office for Victims of Crime join our grief with yours. Our hearts are solemn in reflection, yet open in love.
