OVC distributes money from the Crime Victims Fund, established by the 1984 Victims of Crime Act
(VOCA), to states to support victim compensation and assistance programs.
Compensation programs reimburse victims for crime-related expenses such as
medical costs, mental health counseling, funeral and burial costs, and lost
wages or support.
Approximately 5,600 grants support community-based organizations that serve crime victims.
